The Salafist movement from the 1700s has dominated the public perception of Islam, especially to non-Muslims. This is primarily a protestant movement, rejecting Madhab based hierarchy of scholars and interpreting Islam based on Qur'an and "Sunnah" defined through broad access to Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim via the invention of the Lithographich Printing Press.

The Quranist movement and it's various adjacent movements are made possible by the internet. Today, diverse translations of the Qur'an are broadly available. Internet research also makes hadith scholarship broadly accessible, which many use to criticize hadith.
